Abstract

Introduction: The promotion of prevention programs and protection of healthy lifestyles reflect the new priorities in the area of public health. In this regard, young university students constitute a critical group, in which it is necessary to emphasize efforts through preventive actions instead of corrective actions.

Objective: To propose a reflective analysis to highlight the need to increase university institutional resources to generate equitable and efficient access to public health.

Methods: The use of public health policies and academia is described, by discussing their potentialities and challenges for their implementation, according to the case of a plurinational university, with representation of more than 21 nationalities of the American continent.

Conclusions: Changes in population health reflect the inability of old schemes of thinking to understand public health, which requires a balance between public health policies and academia, including aspects of nutrition and sustainability.

Keywords: university students; community nutrition; institutional policies; public health; sustainability.
