Barriers and Facilitators for the Appropriation of Dengue Prevention Strategies in Urabá-Antioqueño

Abstract

Introduction: Dengue is a viral infectious disease of worldwide distribution that mainly affects countries with tropical and subtropical climates, its transmission occurs through the bite of the female mosquito of the genus Aedes aegypti; it is estimated that 40% of the world's population is at risk of contracting the disease, despite the implementation of multiple strategies, dengue cases are increasing especially in endemic areas.

Objective: To understand the barriers and facilitators in the implementation of social strategies for the prevention of dengue in the municipalities of Apartadó and Turbo in the department of Antioquia, Colombia between the years 2020-2022.

Methods: Study with a qualitative approach, exploratory scope, privileging subjective experience as the main source of information generation; the selected population were residents of the municipalities of Apartadó and Turbo in the department of Antioquia given the high prevalence of the disease, interviews, surveys and interactive techniques were used for the collection of information, the analysis was based on grounded theory.

Results: Seven categories of barriers were identified, classified as: attitudinal, formative, environmental, experiential, institutional, economic and infrastructure, and four categories of facilitators: capacity of the community human resource, training by health personnel, capacity of the institutional resource and biological control.

Conclusions: This study offers an understanding of how the community perceives a problem that affects their daily lives, allowing the recognition of barriers and facilitators for the implementation of preventive strategies, generating an input for the construction of new community programs.
