Abstract

Introduction: The novel coronavirus pandemic, initiated in late December 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, as a pneumonia caused by coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) not only posed a great burden on health services, but also a significant disruption in global society.

Objective: To characterize the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in San Juan and Martinez during the year 2021.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the municipality of San Juan y Martínez in Pinar del Río province, Cuba, during the year 2021. The universe consisted of 6226 people who were diagnosed with COVID-19. The information was obtained through the review of daily reports and epidemiological surveys. The data obtained were stored in an Excel database and processed in the Epinfo statistical system. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis.

Results: In the year 2021, from week 31 to 41 was the epidemic peak in the municipality, and the epicenter of the epidemic was the urban popular council. The female sex and the age group 19 years and younger were the most affected. The highest number of deaths was in the 80 and over age group.

Conclusions: There was an increase in the trend of the incidence of COVID-19 cases and lethality due to this disease.
