Voluntary Interruption of Teenage Pregnancy in the Guacanayabo region, Granma Province

Abstract

Introduction: The voluntary interruption of pregnancy during adolescence in Cuba is an important problem that weighs on the efforts of the National Health System to reduce its occurrence, still a considerable number of cases are reported each year.

Objective: To characterize the voluntary termination of teenage pregnancy in the municipalities of the Guacanayabo region, Granma province.

Methods: A descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted on the voluntary termination of pregnancy during adolescence in 7 municipalities belonging to the Guacanayabo region, Granma province, from January to December 2022.

Results: The municipality of Manzanillo was the one with the highest number of cases The predominance was between 18 and 19 years of age. It was found that 83. 2 % were not married, 86. 1% were studying, and 25.4 % of the adolescents had an obstetric history. The most commonly used method of interruption was (63. 1%).

Conclusions: There is an increase in voluntary interruptions of pregnancy in adolescents, with a greater predominance in ages between 18 and 19 years, therefore, it is necessary potencies actions to decrease this comportment, and health promotion is essential for that.
