Keywords:
Violencia de pareja intima durante la gestación y postparto, Estudio Multicéntrico, LatinoaméricaAbstract
Introduction: Violence against women perpetrated by intimate partners during pregnancy and postpartum can have serious physical and mental consequences for women. In Latin America there are few studies on this issue. Objective: To determine the prevalence of partner violence in women attending Primary Health Centers in four Latin American countries during pregnancy and postpartum, and its association with the victim's and partner's characteristics.
Methods: The study was conducted between 2017 and 2019 in Chile, Uruguay, Peru, and Argentina using an analytical prevalence design. The "Woman Abuse Screening Tool” (WAST) was used to determine the presence of violence against women. A total of 1,020 women participated during the gestation period, and 763 during the postpartum period. The association between violence and the variables studied in women and partners was determined using a multiple linear regression model with 95 % confidence.
Results: The overall prevalence during pregnancy was 15.5 % and 29.6 % in the postpartum period. A similar prevalence was observed between Chile, Peru and Uruguay in both periods studied, with Argentina being the country with the highest prevalence in both stages. The presence of violence was associated with immigrant women, a history of violence in the family of origin, and the partner's consumption of alcohol and drugs.
Conclusions: Violence against women by intimate partners is a multifactorial problem that is observed during pregnancy and postpartum in Latin America.
