Abstract

Introduction: The world is facing serious situations that affect the environment, ranging from natural disasters, wars, to epidemics that compromise life. Environmental problems are aggravated by natural and anthropogenic factors, altering ecosystems and having a significant impact on health. Climate change and environmental pollution can cause communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as provoke intoxications, allergic states, respiratory problems, various diseases that are frequently detected in the long term, and whose effects cause metabolic disorders such as diabetes, immunological, neurological, reproductive alterations, and different types of cancers.

Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge about the environmental dimension in professors of the Medical Career at the University of Medical Sciences of Havana.

Methods: A survey of knowledge about concepts, factors, and problems related to the environment and its links to health problems was applied.

Results: The general result of the questionnaire was 53.13% approval for the professors. These agreed with a low percentage of correct answers in different questions, for example, those that explored important concepts such as environmental dimension and environment, as well as those of environmental problems in Cuba and their effects, for example, pollution among others.

Conclusions: Some cognitive gaps are evident in the environmental sphere and its relationship with professional activity in the studied sample.
