Abstract

The aim of this study is to estimate and analyze suicide mortality in Argentina between the years 1990-2019, seeking to isolate the age-period-cohort effect. It uses the methodology propose by Acosta and van Raalte, which focuses on identifying the divergence of curvatures (deviation from linear effects) through graphic analysis. The analysis involves estimates observed and smoothed mortality rates (using a two-dimensional non-parametric smoothing technique) and plotting them on Lexis diagrams; and plots of change in smoothed rates by age/cohort and by period/cohort. The analysis was carried out in the population between 15 and 75 years old, according to sex. The World Health Organization Mortality Database was used. Population data were obtained from national projections and estimates. According to the main results, the age effect is observed particularly in young people, with an increase since 2000, and in older people, especially men. Regarding the period effect, the increase in mortality around 2000 for all ages stands out. The 60-70 cohorts are those with the lowest risk of mortality from suicide. Conclusions: An effect of age, period and cohort can be observed in Argentina suicide mortality rates during the period 1990-2019.
