Abstract

Introduction: Understanding and solving the health problems of the population requires objective and practical analysis, with a systemic view of the factors or forces that determine it; to this end, epidemiology provides the necessary scientific basis.

Objective: To refer to some issues that distinguish the participation of epidemiology in the field of public health and highlight its guiding position for decision-making.

Methods: A review of the literature available on the Internet was conducted, which discusses the theory and practice of epidemiology and its application in public health.

Conclusions: The challenge posed by population aging requires epidemiological work focused on the study of human groups in their natural environment and framed within the dynamics of economic, social, and cultural changes, as the appropriate way to respond to “real” health needs. Similarly, the emergence and reemergence of communicable diseases highlights the technical leadership of epidemiology, specifically surveillance, which by its nature is an important source of information.
