Abstract

Introduction: Currently, there is limited medical evidence associating laboratory results with prolonged hospital stay.

Objective: To establish an association between the results of laboratory parameters routinely ordered upon admission and prolonged hospital stay.

Methods: A retrospective, analytical, observational study was conducted in patients admitted to the clinical services of Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital from January 1 to June 30, 2023. The independent effect of the studied parameters on hospital stay was evaluated using multivariate Cox regression analysis.

Results: A total of 432 patients were studied; 216 were female and 216 were male. The mean age was 60.5 years. The median length of hospital stays, using the overall survival curve, was 10.2 days (95% CI: 9.1–14.9). Variables independently associated with prolonged hospital stay were age (HR = 1.440; p = 0.04), creatinine (HR = 1.733; p = 0.01), glucose (HR = 1.922; p = 0.03), and neutrophil counts (HR = 1.862; p = 0.04).

Conclusions: Prolonged hospital stay in patients admitted to the hospital's clinical services was directly related to creatinine, glucose, and neutrophil counts, and age at the time of hospital admission.
