Mortality from Acute Myocardial Infarction and Aging in Cuba

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: There is evidence linking age, arterial hypertension, and diabetes mellitus with mortality from acute myocardial infarction in the Cuban population. However, no studies have been conducted using methods to demonstrate or reject this hypothesis throughout the entire country.

Objective: To analyze the relationship of arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and aging in the Cuban population with mortality from acute myocardial infarction between 2009 and 2023.

Methods: An observational, analytical, correlational study was conducted based on data from the Cuban Health Statistics Yearbook (2009-2013). Spearman correlation test was applied; the criteria for statistical significance were r > 0.7 and p < 0.05.

Results: Men presented higher mortality from acute myocardial infarction, despite diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension being more frequent in women. The latter disease showed a significant relationship with mortality from acute myocardial infarction (r ≥ 0.8). Aging had the strongest association with mortality (r > 0.85) and showed links with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus (r > 0.9), which, in turn, were closely related to each other (r ≥ 0.95).

Conclusions: Population aging is significantly correlated with mortality from acute myocardial infarction in the Cuban population. Similarly, although to a lesser extent, this occurs with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus, but with different intensity according to sex.

Keywords: acute myocardial infarction; arterial hypertension; diabetes mellitus; population aging; Cuba.
