Bioclimatic Alert System for dengue Prevention: SAT-DENCLIM

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The increase in climate variability and its impact on vector-borne diseases demand innovative tools to anticipate and manage risks through a preventive approach.

Objective: To present the design and implementation of the Bioclimatic Early Warning System for Dengue (EWS-DENCLIM) and analyze its replicability as a measure of adaptation to climate change.

Methods: A prospective-analytical study of the EWS-DENCLIM implemented in a Cuban community. Ortiz Bulto methodology was applied, providing a hybrid and flexible framework for integrating monthly climatic, epidemiological, and socio-environmental data, along with homogenization, modeling, and spatial analysis procedures supported by GIS. Mixed spatial autoregressive models were used to forecast Aedes aegypti and dengue virus circulation based on climate predictions. The methodology of popular education was employed to implement participatory strategies. Evaluation of the system by the population was conducted through staged interviews and surveys.

Results: forecast maps of the vector and virus were generated, enabling the establishment of risk thresholds to target interventions and optimize resources through differentiated alert levels. Community adherence to preventive measures and a reduction in dengue cases were observed during the implementation period.

Conclusions: EWS-DENCLIM represents an effective adaptation measure to climate variability and change, offering a flexible framework that combines technical rigor with community participation. The system is replicable, provided there is institutional support, sustained funding, and strengthened technical and community capacities.
