Objective: To design an education program for patients and families at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted in three health care services over five years (2018-2022) at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology, Havana. Information was sought through the review of documentary evidence, on-site inspection, and internal audits. Admitted oncohematological patients were considered as inclusion criteria. The processing and analysis of the surveys was based on the study of variables, the results of which are expressed in absolute numbers and percentages.
Results: Three documents were prepared: the design of an education program for patients and relatives, the educational plan aimed at oncohematological patients, and the procedure for educating patients and relatives. The on-site inspection showed that 66% of the hospitalization rooms had the evidence of the records to be implemented, while the internal audits demonstrated compliance with the standard in 83%.
Conclusions: An education program was designed for patients and families whose purpose is to increase the well-being of the quality of life of these people, either by mitigating or eliminating any type of discomfort that could hinder the improvement of their conditions and making them feel accompanied and well cared for during the period of hospitalization at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology.
