Abstract

Introduction: Health is a social construction, but there are people who do not obtain the necessary resources to achieve it.

Objective: Reflect on aspects related to human rights, which allow us to visualize health as a human right and medicines as a social good or a commodity.

Methods: Qualitative-documentary research based on the selection of the main topics of the documents and with the support of their keywords. Documents in English and Spanish from the period 2010-2018, available on the Internet, were chosen for convenience. The brainstorming tool was applied. A critical reading was carried out with reflection and each paragraph was written until its syntactic organization was achieved. The analysis was subdivided into four sections: social context, health as a human right, medicines as a social good or commodity, and final reflections.

Conclusions: Health is a non-generalized human right in Latin America and the price of medicines hinders its access. Greater efforts are required to meet the needs of the people who have the least, so that they can achieve the necessary inputs that allow human development and adequate well-being.
