Prevalence of Academic Burnout in a Group of Students from The Latin American School of Medicine

Abstract

Introduction: Due to the prevalence of Burnout syndrome in the academic area, many studies have been conducted in recent years, demonstrating that Academic Burnout is a reality that affects university students, especially those in health careers.

Objective: To identify the prevalence of Academic Burnout in second-year students of the institution and its relationship with the sex and age of the students.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional research was conducted, by applying the One-Dimensional Scale of Student Burnout by Barraza Macías to the universe of 30 second-year students of the Latin American School of Medicine who presented symptoms of Academic Burnout, during the 21-22 academic year, with prior informed consent. The presence of the syndrome and its levels were investigated and the entity was related to the variables of age and sex. The data were processed through the SPSS program.

Results: Burnout syndrome was observed in the entire sample, with a mild (67%), moderate (27%) and severe (6%) level. The lowest levels were found in older individuals.

Conclusions: The students in this study are affected by academic burnout syndrome, with mild levels prevailing; there were no marked differences according to sex, but there were differences according to age, since those who were most affected were the youngest in the group.
