Abstract

Introduction: The emergence of publications in fraudulent journals has led to misleading models, where science is disseminated with low quality standards. Predatory journals work under a deceptive business model, charging attractive rates, but without carrying out a rigorous review process of the documents submitted for evaluation.

Objective: To analyze scientific publication models and how they have been corrupted towards fraudulent systems for science dissemination, and the challenges faced by new health researchers.

Method: A literature search is carried out from 2005 to 2023, where the terms: predatory journals, fraud, science and scientific publication are mentioned. The search focused on collecting information available in Google academic, Pubmed and Scielo.

Results: Open Access publication models and the digitization of scientific communications have allowed the emergence of fraudulent publication, whose purpose is profit, using low or absent quality standards and the inexperience of many researchers.

Conclusions: The emergence and permanence of fraudulent journals is and will be a constant. It is necessary to train academics who begins in the field of scientific publication, so they will not be exposed to bad practices in science.
