Dengue Prevention and Control, an Approach from Afro-descendant Family Practices

Abstract

Introduction: Dengue represents a public health problem, which has worsened in recent years due to multiple factors, among which are the cultural practices of the population and although studies have been carried out on this aspect in various populations, it has been little approach has been made in the Afro-descendant population.

Objective: to understand the practices in an Afro-descendant community in Colombia, which contribute to the management of strategies for the prevention and control of dengue.

Methods: This research was carried out under a qualitative approach of the micro ethnographic type, performing a non-probability sampling for convenience and the sample size was determined by theoretical saturation point, in addition, the information was collected through a semi-structured interview.

Results: 19 Afro-descendant families were interviewed, in which practices were found to repel the mosquito and avoid its reproduction, although in adequate practices were also evidenced; on the other hand, there are other traditional and modern methods to all relief some non-specific symptoms of dengue.

Conclusions: It is necessary to intervene those practices that constitute a risk factor for the spread of dengue, from an intercultural approach that allows guaranteeing the sustainability of these actions.
