Abstract

Introduction: The need to objectively analyze and explain the influence of health determinants on the problems that affect populations requires family physicians to use accredited methods of inquiry to search for information and logical procedures to verify their objectivity.

Objective: To argue on the appropriateness of non-parametric statistical tests for the development of the research dimension of general integral medicine.

Methods: A documentary review was carried out regarding the importance of the health determinants approach in the analysis of the problems to be solved by family doctors and the use of hypothesis tests as tools to develop these analyses. The sources of information consulted were accessed through different search engines and databases, including SciELO, Google Scholar, Medline and PubMed.

Conclusions: Hypothesis tests are an auxiliary tool that strengthens the analysis of the influence of health determinants on the problems that family doctors must solve as a requirement of the research dimension of their profession. The complex, dynamic and multifactorial nature of the populations where family doctors work, together with their preferences to approach the analysis of these problems from a frequentist perspective and a non-metric scaling, point to non-parametric tests as the statistical procedures of greater feasibility for their development.
