Abstract

Introduction: In the world 50 million people live with dementia. It is estimated that this number will increase to 82 million in 2030 and 152 million in 2050, unless their risk factors are identified and interventions are implemented that allow their prevention, delay their onset, slow down or stop their progression.

Objective: To identify the available evidence on the prevalence of dementia risk factors and the importance of their reduction in delaying or preventing the onset of the disease.

Methods: A review of the literature on the subject published between January 1, 2010 and July 30, 2020 was conducted. The search was carried out in the databases PubMed/Medline, Embase, LILACS, SciELO and Cochrane CENTRAL, and the search equation was formulated from Boolean questions ("Alzheimer's", OR "dementia", OR "cognitive impairment" AND "risk", AND "prevention").

Conclusions: The existence of potentially modifiable risk factors means that dementia prevention is possible through a public health strategy, with key interventions that delay or slow the onset of cognitive decline and dementia.
