Characteristics and adverse consequences on human health of agrochemicals used in Cuban agriculture
Keywords:
farmers, agroecology, organophosphate, pesticides, crop protection productsAbstract
Introduction: Agrochemicals are chemical substances (pesticides and fertilizers) used in agriculture to maintain the sustainable and safe production of crops and animals. Their use is widespread, but like any chemical, agrochemicals should be used with caution as they can be harmful to humans and the environment.
Objective: Review the existing literature on studies related to the impact and use of pesticides in Cuba and other regions, which help in the analysis and evaluation of the Cuban scenario.
Methods: A literature review was conducted, which included mainly reviews, opinion articles, books and articles related to studies on the impact and use of pesticides in Cuba, and other regions. The terms "use of pesticides in Cuba", "pesticides in Cuban agriculture", "impact and effect of pesticides in Cuba", "use of pesticides in Latin America and developing countries" and their translation into English were searched in the fields of Summary, Title and Keyword in databases as ScienceDirect, Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar.
Conclusions: Although significant changes have developed in agriculture in Cuba in recent years and many authors consider that this country has taken important steps toward agroecology, there are important epistemological gaps in terms of the types of pesticides used, their active ingredients and the distribution of toxic loads.
