Abstract

Introduction: Individuals with risk factors for diabetes mellitus that maintain sedentary behaviors over time may increase the risk of suffering from the disease.

Objective: To provide new evidence on the association between certain sedentary behaviors and the risk of diabetes mellitus in people with a predisposition to suffer from the disease.

Methods: An integrative review was conducted. The search was conducted through databases such as Medline (PubMed), Cochrane, LILACS and SciELO. The study period was 2014-2019. The search terms used, according to the inclusion criteria, were physical inactivity, sedentary behaviors and diabetes mellitus/risk. 65 articles were identified, of which 23 were selected and contributed to the final result. The most outstanding results on the relationship of each of the sedentary behaviors mentioned with the risk of diabetes mellitus were described.

Conclusions: It is considered that lying down or sitting for a long time, mainly in front of a visual screen, is one of the sedentary behaviors that have a proven relationship with the risk of diabetes mellitus.
