Intersectorality, importance and limitations in its application in Cuba

Abstract

Introduction: The continuous strengthening of primary health care, as a strategy of the National Health System of Cuba, and the sustained improvement of the quality of life of the population, require transformations in the application of intersectorality, as a technology that articulates policies, strategies and actions for the social production of health.

Objective: To explain the importance and limitations in the application of intersectorality in Cuba, and its interrelations with other sciences and processes associated with public health.

Methods: A narrative review was carried out, based on consultations with information resources available in SciELO and EBSCO. The word "intersectorality" was used as a search term. The documentary analysis technique was used to identify its applications, importance, relationships and benefits. The search was conducted between January 2019 and January 2021. The methods used were analysis-synthesis; induction-deduction; historical-logical.

Conclusions: It is necessary to deepen the potentialities of intersectorality and its interrelations with other sciences to face the social determinants, as an expression of the essential functions of public health. It depends on improving the social production of health and raising in a sustainable way the population´s quality of life.
