Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is one of the main causes of disability in Mexico. It affects people at working age and economically active, as well as causes deaths and high medical care costs.
Objective: To determine the years of productive life potentially lost in workers with secondary disability due to diabetes mellitus.
Methods: An observational and retrospective descriptive study was carried out with a total 60 647 disability reports due to diabetes made by the coordinating group for occupational health in Mexico in the years 1998-2018. Pearson's correlation was used to measure statistical relationships, while the Student's t-test was used to compare averages.
Results: The number of diabetes-related disability reports increased in 83 %, manifestoing mostly among men and the 55-59 age group. The lost years corresponded to a total of 842 295, with an average of 14.63 years per worker. The year with the highest loss was 2018, accounting for 91 223 years.
Conclusions: Secondary disability due to diabetes mellitus has significantly increased the potentially lost years of life and has decreased the quality of life of the worker. Therefore, there is a need for health authorities to implement new preventive policies.
