Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused reactions and consequences in all areas of individual and collective life; it has become a complex public health problem. The risk perception of ontagion has been associated with the adoption of self-perception measures and the follow up of biosecurity protocols.

Objective: To evaluate the risk perception of COVID-19 contagion and to know its possible associations with socioeconomic and health variables in the Colombian population.

Methods: The questionnaire to assess the risk perception of COVID-19 infection (PCR-CV19) was applied to a sample of 2563 Colombians from 18 to 65 years old. The OneWay ANOVA statistic was used for the analysis, complemented by post hoc analysis and association measures.

Results: A high level of risk perception of contagion and significant associations were found with socioeconomic variables like age, gender, socioeconomic stratum, academic background, area of work performance; and with health variables like obesity, not presenting symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Conclusions: The risk perception of COVID-19 infection was associated with socioeconomic and health variables. This is a necessary construct to address from public health that constitutes a barrier to avoid reinfections due to asymptomatic or mild cases and, in this way, prevent new outbreaks of COVID-19 and its variants.
