Abstract

Introduction: The survival increase in cancer patients has brought an increase in patients in advanced stages. It is essential that the health professional has a solid preparation in ethical values and bioethical principles and sees the patient as an integral being.

Objective: To characterize the bioethical instruction of primary level physicians in the care provided to terminally ill cancer patients.

Methods: A pedagogical descriptive research was carried out in the postgraduate area, in Habana Vieja municipality, from September 2021 to February 2022. The universe consisted of 60 specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine to whom a survey was applied. The analytical method was used in articles published in the databases: Scielo, Lilacs, Hinari, Medline, PubMed.

Results: 51.67% were female, with higher representation of the age group under 30 years (46.67%). 75% of the professionals required teaching and scientific status. 63.33% did not have knowledge of bioethical principles. The topics recognized as most in need of learning were communication with patients, family members and caregivers, psychological and emotional support, as well as confidentiality and decision-making.

Conclusions: There are deficiencies in the development of the bioethical approach in health professionals, so it would be pertinent to develop a new Basic Training Program in Bioethics from undergraduate to continuing education in postgraduate studies, as well as to implement the bioethical advisory commission at the primary care level.
