Reproductive Work in Cuba, a View from the National Health Survey
Keywords:
sexual division of labor, unpaid work, domestic work.Abstract
Introduction: The gender division of labor differentiates it between paid and unpaid. The latter has been exercised more frequently by women, to the detriment of their opportunities and health.
Objective: To identify the characteristics of unpaid work and social support according to sociodemographic variables in the Cuban population.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with the participation of 9,321,061 Cubans aged 15 years and older; 7026 men and 7313 women, as part of the National Health Survey 2018-2020. A structured questionnaire was applied in the homes to explore the variables related to responsibility in the performance of household chores, care of minor children, the elderly, the disabled, and social support, sex, age groups and area of residence. The information was summarized in percentages and their 95% CIs.
Results: Women predominated in the performance of household chores and care for children, the disabled and the elderly, with no differences by area of residence. The social support received was similar for men and women. As age increased, so did the possibility of receiving love and affection and of having people to exchange.
Conclusions: An unequal distribution of domestic work, care of family members and social support perceived by the population throughout the life course prevailed, with worse results as age increased, which calls for the implementation of more effective strategies with a gender perspective.
