Abstract

Introduction: The relationship between economy and health has become evident during the unprecedented crisis generated by COVID-19.

Objective: To determine the economic impact of COVID-19 in the “Ramón López Peña” polyclinic.

Methods: A retrospective study of the type of cost description was carried out. The methodological approach used was the cost of the disease. Expenses were expressed in Cuban pesos. The institutional analysis perspective was adopted here. In the calculation of COVID-19 expenses, the following variables were considered: budget expenses, COVID-19 cases, destination of budget expenses, medication expenses.

Results: COVID-19 expenses represented 25% of the unit's total budget expenses. In the months of July and August there was greater spending in the budget allocated to the pandemic, which coincided with the months with the highest number of case reports, 60.3% of the expenses were allocated to pandemic medicines and materials; 52.3% of them was used to purchase vaccines for the population.

Conclusions: High percentage of the budget was allocated to containing the epidemic. With the introduction of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine, it was possible to contain the levels of contagion and the levels of expenditure in the health area.
