Abstract

Background: adverse reactions by drugs are an emergent pathology, with a great health care, social and economical repercussion.
Objective
: characterizing the low-frequency drug adverse reactions reported to the National Coordinating Unit of Pharmacovigilance from 2004 to 2013.
Methods
: cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study of case series in Pharmacovigilance. Low-frequency adverse reactions are described according to intensity and accountability, among other variables.
Results
: A total of 51 523 low-frequency drug-adverse reactions were evaluated. The ones classified as occasionally prevailed with 30 323 reports (58.8 %). The demographic characteristics in the low-frequency reports showed the age group of 60 years and more as the age group with higher report rate for 29.6 per thousand inhabitants.  Female patients prevailed with 65.2 % of the total of the presented cases. The skin and cutaneous annexes were the most affected, and the more implicated drugs were Dipyrone (29.2 %) and Penicillin G (28.9 %). The moderated low-frequency drug adverse reactions (58.3 %), the probable ones (66.5 %) and the Type B ones (50. 1 %) predominated, the last one according to the production mechanism.
Conclusions
: the notification of low-frequency adverse reactions, especially if they are to drugs of recent commercialization, allows knowing better its toxicity profile and contributes to reducing risks among the population.
