Educational Intervention for Patients in Menopausal Stages with A Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease and Diabetes Mellitus

Introduction: The biological changes that originate during the menopausal process not only cause irregularities in the menstrual cycle, but also other clinical manifestations affecting the quality of life in women, including periodontal conditions and diabetes mellitus.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention for patients in menopausal stages with a diagnosis of periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus.
Methods: An educational intervention was carried out on female patients who attended the Periodontics consultation of 3 de Octubre Teaching Stomatology Clinic, in Las Tunas province during the period from May 2021 to May 2022. The study was represented by 520 women over 35 years of age who consented to participate. The data obtained, through the clinical examination and individual interview, were compiled in the clinical record of each patient, and reflected in tables for better discernment.
Results: The predominant age group was 35 to 59 years old with 97.3% of the total studied. Severe periodontitis prevailed in 44.0% at baseline. The degree of oral hygiene was evaluated as Bad in 61.5% and at the end it was Good in 94.23%. The level of knowledge was assessed as Bad at the beginning of the intervention and after the intervention, it rose to Good in 98.08%.
Conclusions: The effectiveness of the educational intervention was proven by improving motivation and education in oral health care in the population.
