Abstract

Introduction: Doctoral training from municipal institutions in the health sector in Cuba is scarce, which could compromise the promotion of local development.

Objective: To describe the peculiarities of the doctoral training process from municipal institutions as a contribution to local development.

Methods: A documentary review was carried out. Outstanding studies were located and selected in the electronic databases Medline, Virtual Health Library, Google Scholar, SciELO and in digital books. For the search, the words doctoral training, doctorate in Sciences, scientific degree, scientific category, local development and academic postgraduate studies were used. 115 publications from the last 46 years, until the time of the study, were found on the subject in general and 47 were chosen, which made up the sample, because they addressed the relationship between doctoral training from municipal scenarios and local development.

Conclusions: Cuba has a National System of Scientific Degrees duly updated, so that professionals with scientific potential from any institution can move to obtain the scientific degree. The work of primary health care is carried out entirely in the municipality, and as a subsystem of the National Health System it is integrated by assistance, teaching, administration and research, which are interrelated. The research opportunities from the municipalities are multiple and there are many scientific problems that at the local level could constitute lines of doctoral research with important contributions to the development of the territory. It is important that the municipal authorities reflect on these aspects and support the professionals devoted to this task.
